How to Play Block Play
Block Play is a 9×9 block puzzle you play right in your browser. The rules take seconds to learn, but scoring well takes planning. This guide walks you through the goal, the controls, how lines clear, and the habits that keep a run alive for far longer.
The goal
You are given three pieces at a time and drop them onto a 9×9 grid. Whenever you completely fill a row, a column, or one of the nine 3×3 boxes, those cells clear and you score. There is no timer — the run ends only when none of your three current pieces can fit anywhere. The aim is simply to keep clearing space and pushing your score higher.
Controls
- Drag and drop: grab a piece from the tray and drop it onto the board.
- Tap to place: on touch screens, tap a piece, then tap the target cell.
- A piece can only be placed where all of its cells land on empty squares.
- Once placed, a piece leaves the tray; a new set of three arrives when the tray is empty.
How lines clear
Block Play clears in three ways, and a single placement can trigger several at once:
- A full row of 9 cells clears.
- A full column of 9 cells clears.
- A full 3×3 box clears — this is the twist that sets the 9×9 mode apart.
Clearing more than one line with the same piece is a combo and is worth bonus points, so it pays to set up overlaps before you commit.
Scoring
You earn points for every cell you place, plus a larger bonus for each line you clear. Combos and back-to-back clears multiply that bonus. Your best score is saved locally in your browser, so you always have a target to beat.
Beginner tips
- Keep the centre open — edges and corners are easier to fill later.
- Look at all three pieces before placing the first one.
- Leave room for large shapes; a single trapped 3×3 piece can end a run.
- Chase 3×3 box clears — they free up space without needing a full row.

When does a game end?
The run ends when none of your three current pieces can be placed anywhere on the board.
Is my progress saved?
Your best score is stored locally in your browser via localStorage. No account is needed.
